I just got this book today, and I think it's awesome. I'm a fairly new uke player, but with a background in piano and bass. The book is great because it logically shows how shapes on the fretboard can allow you to play chords in any key. Chords covered aren't just major and minor, but also augmented, diminished, suspended, etc. I appreciate the closed/open voicings, the diagrams that show the root whether or not it's played, and how you can play parts of a chord rather than all four strings. I tune my tenor in Bb, so I especially appreciated the fretboard map for Bb! Brad's humor also makes the book snap. My favorite line: "Hire a bass player."One word of caution: this is not a chord dictionary, so it won't have pages showing you how to play specific chords (for example, Am, G, ...). It's more like a method of understanding how chords are built on the uke, so that when you understand it, you can play Am in any one of several ways, all over the fretboard. All in all, I look forward to studying this material and freeing myself from the first three frets of my uke.

Brad Bordessa's "Ukulele Chord Shapes" book delivers on its promise of "More Strumming, Less Memorizing." I have played ukuleles for years, are a part of a local ukulele club and own many ukulele instructional books and resource guides. The "Ukulele Chord Shapes" book is absolutely unique in that it gets straight to the point about getting the reader more familiar with their ukulele fretboard along with learning the generic chord shapes for virtually any set of chords in any key. I would say that this book is best suited for a student who is willing to take the time necessary to work through the book with their ukulele, page by page, so as to learn the various chord shapes and allow the "light bulb of better understanding" to turn on in the mind.

Author presupposes quite a bit of music theory. For a beginning player who is just learning chords and finger placements, for a finger picker who relies on TABs, STAY AWAY. For example, author uses the term, SCALE DEGREE (a term in music theory), but does not even bother to try to explain it. This book is for the intermediate player, with some music theory under his/her belt. It you just want to learn chords to strum with a song, this is not the book for you, despite what the reviews say. Learning different strumming patterns would be more useful, along with chords that go with a song.

I really love the concepts presented in this book. Before reading this book I was working on rote memorization of chords, which was proving to be slow and tedious. This book helped me understand the benefit of memorizing my fretboard and chord shapes instead. This information has really helped me move from basic open chords to being able to play different types of chords (major, minor, dominant, diminished, etc) in any key using the entire fretboard.

Best book for really learning. Suggest Intermediate skill but if you are musically inclined makes learning much better

Great book! I'm using a lot

It is not an easy learning tool and I think it needs a lot of memorization. There are not enough explanations of the different shapes shown and kind of keep me guessing. Hopefully I will be able to figure out how to use it. The illustrations are very nice though.

I haven't spent enough time with this book yet, but the theory is excellent and explained well. I look forward to increasing my knowledge of the ukulele fretboard when I finally have time to sit down with it more.
